Save your Music Cafe from closure. Act now.
Dear Undergraduate Students:
As you know, your FMUA is working hard towards reopening your Music Cafe this upcoming school year. However, something changed last week with our administration.
Students, there is now an active threat opposing the reopening of our cafe.
Food Services, a department of the central University that deals with food and beverages on campus, is actively opposing our efforts to reopen. We believe that they are taking action because we would be competing against the Law Cafe next door, which Food Services helps operate and, most importantly, make money on.
Students, your FMUA fees (which totals to $600 a year) are being used to reopen your cafe. If Food Services and the central University shuts us down now, we would have wasted nearly $20,000 of your money. Let your money not go to waste.
Students, take 5 minutes and send an email to:
Anne Macdonald, Food Services (anne.macdonald@utoronto.ca)
Sandy Welsh, Vice-President Students (vp.students@utoronto.ca; eaone.viceprovoststudents@utoronto.ca)
Ryan McClelland, our beloved Dean (dean.music@utoronto.ca)
Copy these emails! Let them know that you want to see your cafe open! Even if it is an email just saying: “I want to see the Music Cafe open.” — that would be enough. Enough to know that we cannot be ignored!
They think they can bully us into submission because we are the smallest student society.
They think they can threaten us, to force the FMUA to stop working on your behalf.
They think they can force us back into the status quo, in which our voices are not heard.
Think of MacMillan Theatre which will not reopen this year.
Think of the music stands that the University does not have the budget for.
Think of all the times in which your needs have been denied due to some mysterious bureaucracy!
They cannot ignore us forever. Our voices are strong and united.
The University did not reopen our cafe, did not provide support to us in attempting to reopen, did not even attempt to reach out after it closed, but is actively squashing YOUR will to reopen the cafe.
Students, I have attached to this email some photos of the soft launch day on Monday. The cafe is complete (yes, complete!) and ready-to-operate — we are looking forward to serving you in September!
Students, if you want to see the cafe open during the 2024-2025 school year (and look as happy as Dr. Edwards) send an email now!
Sincerely,
Your FMUA
